As if majors and myspace wasn’t bad enough
So this band once put out a record using disgustingly hyperbolic quotes for a sticker on the shrinkwrap, all about how the man behind the band would become the voice of a generation. Over time it would emerge that the quotes were solicited from a website whose creator and driving force offers up custom “reviews” for a nominal fee.
As if that weren’t an auspicious enough debut, after signing to a major label frontman Max Bemis decided he was going to write a double album crammed with as much lousy filler as he could manage under the pretense that he was creating scathing criticism of a genre that routinely feeds on itself and he apparently has a great deal of derision for. Instead, there’s at least one song with farting.
Now Bemis has decided to sell personalized songs to his fans. For $150 he’ll write a song about anything you want. You won’t own the song, publishing of it, or even be able to put it on a CD or put it in any situation where it could possibly be shared in any way. They had to shut it down after only a few days because they got too many people putting in requests. Apparently their aim is to “change the way music works.”
Well played, sir. Taking advantage of your fans is always a classy move.
